This is an instant and easy to prepare chutney which is very popular in the South of India. Indian gooseberry is loaded with health benefits and hence used in a wide variety of pickles and chutneys. Although typically I use the raw goose berries in the pickles but here I have cooked them for some time. This lip smacking chutney is a must try.

Ingredients:

  • 10 goose berries
  • 1/4 cup sesame oil
  • 5-6 dried red chillies
  • 2 tbsp methi or fenugreek seeds
  • 1 tbsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp hing or asafoetida powder
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/4th cup chopped coriander

Method:

Cut the Amla into large pieces and discard the seeds. Heat oil in a pan , till it is smoking hot and reduce the heat . Add the red chillies and roast them till dark in colour . Then add the methi and mustard seeds and allow them to roast to a dark brown colour and the mustard seeds start spluttering. Add the hing powder and turn off the heat . Remove the chillies and seeds into a grinder jar and leave the oil behind in the pan . Now turn on the heat again and add the Amla pieces to the oil along with the salt. Cover and cook this till the Amla pieces are semi done. Do not let them cook fully soft. Add these pieces to the grinder and grind everything together to a coarse texture. Mix in the coriander leaves and serve with a hot meal.
